Building Smarter Tools for the Power Systems Behind AI

AI innovation does not happen through processing power alone. Behind every advanced computing platform is a highly complex power system that needs to operate efficiently, accurately, and reliably. Understanding and optimizing those systems requires engineers who are prepared to look beyond individual components, challenge existing assumptions, and create entirely new ways of solving problems.

At Renesas, I work on tools that make complex power systems easier to understand and optimize. What often begins as a solution to one engineering challenge can develop into something much bigger, helping colleagues and customers work faster, explore systems more deeply, and ultimately contribute to the technologies supporting the future of AI.

I studied Electrical Engineering at Politecnico di Torino and spent a year at ENSEEIHT in Toulouse through the Erasmus program. That experience helped me become comfortable working in international environments, while also giving me the opportunity to learn French.

I began my career in the automotive industry, working with telematics and the optimization of vehicle data. From the beginning, however, I never wanted to remain within the boundaries of one discipline. Programming, particularly Python, became an important part of the way I approached engineering.

“Automate to speed things up” is essentially my motto. But automation, for me, is not simply about saving time. It is a way to understand how a process works from beginning to end, identify where it can be improved, and then build something that makes that improvement possible.

Over time, I became increasingly interested in automatic data collection and analysis. I used these capabilities to make predictions and conduct large-scale studies that helped me understand how complete systems behave. That naturally led to a growing interest in building AI models to tackle even more complex engineering problems.

When the opportunity to join Renesas came up, a few colleagues and I made the move together. Two years later, I can clearly say that it was the right decision. I have found the space to grow, take initiative, and create solutions with real impact.

I joined Renesas as an Application Engineer, initially focusing on validating controller boards and Smart Power Stages for customer applications. Before long, my role evolved from validating existing solutions to looking for areas where I could add new value. That meant identifying engineering challenges, questioning how we approached them, and eventually proposing and developing new tools myself.

Over the past couple of years, my work has been varied and fast-paced. I have specialized in optimizing IMON accuracy on Smart Power Stages, written Bash scripts for our customers, and developed prototypes for new controller optimization tools.

I became especially interested in digital controllers because of how configurable the system can be. That flexibility creates exciting possibilities, but it can also introduce complexity. To make these systems easier to work with, I began developing complete tools from the ground up, starting with low-level register writing and building all the way through to APIs and graphical user interfaces.

Some of these tools are used internally, while others have been proposed as solutions for customers.

“The most interesting problems are often the ones without a ready-made answer.”

No two days look the same in my role, and there is always a new problem to solve. That variety is one of the things that keeps me engaged.

What motivates me most is the challenge itself. I want to work on problems that push me to explore, learn, and think differently. If the answer is already obvious, the work is much less interesting.

That is why one of the most rewarding areas I am working on today is the prototyping of new tools for controller optimization. There is no single established solution to follow. Instead, I have the freedom to experiment, test ideas, and gradually turn those ideas into practical engineering tools.

This type of work brings together detailed, low-level system knowledge and a more innovative, entrepreneurial mindset. It gives me the opportunity to challenge outdated assumptions and explore completely new approaches. When I am deeply involved in solving a problem like this, it sometimes does not even feel like work.

My work on engineering tools originally started out of curiosity. I was building solutions for myself because I wanted to understand the systems better and make my own work more efficient. What surprised me was how many colleagues wanted to use those tools too. I realized that what appeared to be only my problem was not unique to me. In engineering, it rarely is.

That realization has shaped the way I think about the tools I build. The goal is to create instruments that make everyday work easier, reduce the time engineers spend searching through documentation, and help people understand the behavior of the system more intuitively.

What makes Renesas unique for me as an engineer is that when you perform well and show initiative, it is genuinely noticed and appreciated. Being entrepreneurial, taking ownership, and turning ideas into action really matter here.

No one can fully see every bit of effort another person puts into their work each day. However, at Renesas, I have found people who make the effort to listen and understand.

That creates a transparent and open working environment where you can propose an idea, take responsibility for developing it, and see your contribution recognized. For me, that recognition is just as important as the effort itself. It gives you the confidence to keep experimenting, continue learning, and take on the next challenge.

It is a major part of why I feel that I belong here.

AI and high-performance computing are developing rapidly, and the power technologies supporting them must evolve just as quickly. For engineers, this creates an opportunity to work on real, cutting-edge problems while the field is still taking shape.
