A Day with Martin Pokorny, Validation and Infrastructure Director, UK: Powering the Future of AI

3 Card/Text Snippet

Behind every AI model, data center, and high-performance computing platform is a complex infrastructure that must be efficient, reliable, and capable of handling enormous demands. Meet Martin Pokorny to better understand that helping build that foundation is part of everyday life.

As Validation and Infrastructure Director in Renesas' Performance Computing Power Business Division, Martin leads IC validation activities for products including Smart Power Stages and Digital Multiphase Controllers used in AI data centers. His work helps ensure that the technologies powering next-generation AI systems perform exactly as intended.

From Semiconductor Expert to AI Enabler

Martin's career in semiconductors spans more than 25 years. Originally from the Czech Republic, he spent a decade working at Texas Instruments in France before moving to the UK to join Dialog Semiconductor, which later became part of Renesas. Throughout his career, he has focused on software development, lab automation, and validation, building expertise at the intersection of engineering innovation and operational excellence.

Today, that experience is helping drive technologies that support one of the fastest-growing industries in the world: artificial intelligence.

Making Innovation Faster Without Compromising Quality

One of the biggest challenges Martin's team faces is to transform Validation Automation so that it is fast - ever shortening the time to market, but without compromising the validation rigor and thoroughness (which would impact quality of the product).

To achieve this, his team is transforming the validation process from end to end. They are developing automation that spans the entire product lifecycle, from defining validation requirements and creating test descriptions to collecting data, analyzing results, and generating reports.

This work helps engineering teams move faster while ensuring quality remains at the highest level.

Using AI to Advance AI Infrastructure

One of the most exciting aspects of Martin's role is that AI is influencing not only the products Renesas develops, but also how engineering teams work.

Validation activities generate big amounts of data, including measurement results and oscilloscope captures of complex transient events. Martin and his team are developing algorithms and software tools that help analyze this information more efficiently, enabling engineers to gain insights more quickly and streamline development processes.

By using intelligent automation and advanced data analysis, the team is helping reduce validation timelines and accelerate innovation. The result is a faster path from concept to product, supporting the continued evolution of AI technologies.

Helping Shape the Future of AI

The products Martin's team validates play a direct role in powering AI servers and data center infrastructure. As AI workloads continue to expand, so does the need for hardware that delivers higher performance while consuming energy more efficiently.

For Martin, this creates an opportunity to contribute to challenges that matter on a global scale.

"There are concerns about the impact of data centers on the environment and the power grid," he says. "We are uniquely placed to address these through the efficiency and innovation of our products."

Every improvement in efficiency helps support more sustainable and capable AI systems, making the work meaningful not only from a technical perspective, but also from a broader societal one.

Why Renesas?

What keeps Martin motivated after decades in the industry is the opportunity to innovate.

He enjoys shaping strategy, developing new solutions, and finding ways to make his team's work more effective. Equally important is the ability to collaborate with talented engineers who are solving complex technical challenges together.

For engineers interested in AI, Renesas offers the chance to work on technologies that sit at the heart of modern computing, from advanced power solutions to the infrastructure that enables next-generation AI platforms.

Martin's Advice for Future Engineers

When asked what advice he would give engineers considering a career at Renesas, Martin highlights something that goes beyond technology.

"Discover as much as you can about the team and group you consider joining. Renesas is a big corporation, but ultimately what matters most are the guys next to you; you stand and fall together."

It's a reminder that great innovation is built through collaboration, and that the people around you often have the biggest impact on your professional growth and success.

Building the Foundations of Tomorrow's AI

A day with Martin Pokorny is a day spent thinking about how to make engineering smarter, faster, and more efficient.

Whether it's advancing validation automation, leveraging AI-driven analysis, or helping deliver technologies that power AI data centers, his work demonstrates that the future of AI depends on more than software alone. It depends on the engineers building the reliable, high-performance foundations that make innovation possible.
