Broaden Your Horizons: My Journey as a Field Application Engineer at Renesas

More Than Just Development

When I was studying, electrical engineering wasn't only my degree, it was my hobby. I designed circuits for my professor, took on freelance work, and spent almost all my time developing. I loved it, but doing only that eventually started to feel repetitive.

During my bachelor's thesis, I came into contact with Field Application Engineers from different companies for the first time, and it opened my eyes to a role I hadn't considered. I realized I wanted something more dynamic — a way to keep using my engineering background while also getting out, meeting people, and seeing how technology is applied in the real world.

Graduate FAE positions weren't common at most companies at the time. Renesas had an opening that fit my skillset perfectly, and that made my decision an easy one.

How It All Started Building a Strong Foundation

My start was full of hands-on training at our different locations across several countries. My first manager really focused on giving me a good start — solid technical support first, and a gradual, comfortable introduction to customer visits.

Early on, I was also made technical expert for certain products in the European region. That trust gave me real confidence and a sense that my contribution mattered from the very beginning

Growing Through Trust and Support

Over time, I've taken on more customers and more responsibility. I've had support from every side to deepen my knowledge across multiple fields, get the right training, and even find time for side projects like PCB design work and university visits to connect with new graduates.

Technically, Jörg Weeger was my mentor and played an important role in my development. More broadly, I'm grateful to all the managers who trusted and supported me along the way.One project that really stands out was designing a complete motor control board for a customer application. I did everything from schematic to layout, brought the board up, and deployed it as a test platform for multiple customer projects.

It let me combine hands-on engineering with real customer impact, exactly what I love about this role, and I learned a huge amount along the way.

Connections That Last

One of my favorite memories is the FAE training in Hong Kong back in 2023. FAEs from all over the world came together — it was my first time meeting so many colleagues face-to-face, and my first time seeing Hong Kong too.

Beyond everything I learned technically, those personal connections have stayed with me. Even now that we're all back in our own offices or working from home, it's so much easier to stay in touch and work together because we met in person. To me, that's proof that face-to-face moments build stronger relationships than online contact ever can.

What Makes Renesas Special

For me, it comes down to the people and the culture. My colleagues, including those in completely different business units, are all great to work with, and there's real room here to develop quickly.

My advice for future talent is to focus on your strengths and be a team player. Be honest, and don't be afraid to ask questions. If you enjoy technology but also want variety, customer contact, and the chance to keep learning, an FAE career at Renesas can be a genuinely rewarding path.
