“Be a Leader”: Take Ownership and Grow at Renesas

3 Card/Text Snippet

At Renesas, starting your career as a young engineer means more than simply following instructions. You’re encouraged to step up early, take ownership, and be a leader from the very start.

Engineering is About the Process

When I was a university student, I was fascinated by semiconductors, the technology behind so many innovations, and decided to deepen my knowledge in this field. Through my academic experiences, I naturally aspired to build a career in a global semiconductor environment. Renesas stood out immediately, and I then started my career as an Application Engineer in Takasaki, intentionally stepping outside my comfort zone. It was a valuable experience that helped me build a strong technical foundation while growing personally in a new environment.

After two years, I moved to the Power Management IC team at headquarters, coincidentally the same department where I interned at Dialog Semiconductor, which was later acquired by Renesas. Today, I work on post-silicon validation, testing IC chips under real conditions and ensuring product functionality before release.

Even for a single tiny IC chip, there are many evaluation items. At first, I focused on speed and efficiency. But over time, I realized that making mistakes is a natural part of the process and that taught me that engineering is more about the process itself - learning through challenges, understanding mistakes, and improving step by step. This shift helped me develop a more thoughtful and sustainable approach to my work.

Learning to “Be a Leader” Early

One piece of advice from my manager had a lasting impact on me: “Be a leader. Take ownership of your work.”

At first, I didn’t think of myself as a leader. But I realized that leadership isn’t about seniority; it’s about mindset. It can be demonstrated in everyday work by taking initiative, being accountable, and thinking proactively about how to contribute.

Adopting this approach helped me gain confidence and take stronger ownership of my role. Even as a young engineer, I learned that I could create value by stepping up and taking responsibility in my daily work.

Growing Through Teamwork and Real Impact

At Renesas, collaboration is essential. I work closely with my team in the lab, discussing challenges, analyzing results, and identifying root causes together. These interactions are one of the most valuable parts of my learning experience.

When I joined my current department, I had to learn a new product area from scratch. With strong support from my team, I gradually built up the knowledge needed to contribute.

One of the most memorable moments in my journey was identifying a critical bug in my first project. It was a complex issue, but through collaboration and persistence, we solved it and implemented improvements. This experience gave me confidence and showed me that I could make a meaningful impact.

In recognition of my growth, I was honored to receive the Best Young Engineer Award and a promotion to Staff Application Engineer, reinforcing the importance of continuous learning and taking initiative.

A Global Environment that Supports Growth

What excites me about Renesas is both the scale of its impact and its international environment. Our products are used across industries worldwide, and collaboration with global teams brings new perspectives to everyday challenges.

For anyone considering Renesas, I would say this: if you are looking for a place where you can grow, take initiative, and develop your potential early in your career, you will find great opportunities here.

Life Beyond Work

Outside of work, it’s the small moments that make the experience special. One of my favorites is “Kebab Thursday,” when colleagues get together for lunch by the seaside. It’s a simple routine, but it reflects the strong sense of connection that makes working at Renesas even more enjoyable.
