Discovering SoC Design and a Global Culture at Renesas

On my first day of joining Renesas in the Musashi office, Japan.

In the final semester of my engineering degree in India, I interned at a company that developed ruggedized embedded solutions for the Indian defense sector. While selecting components for my schematic, I discovered Renesas and ended up incorporating several of its components into my design. This sparked my interest in Renesas products, and I began exploring the company further.

The Global Culture and Collaborative Teams Make a Big Difference

I was applying for my master’s program in Japan and connected with a senior from the lab I was aiming to join, via LinkedIn. To my surprise, he was working at Renesas as a digital engineer and inspired me to apply for the internship.

My entire internship experience at Renesas was exciting and extremely insightful. I worked on prototyping a CAN-IP on an FPGA emulator. I learned a lot about FPGA emulators and simulators used in verification. It was also a great experience to participate in a meeting with Cadence, an EDA supplier, and to learn about the latest developments in the field.

Before starting the internship at Renesas, I was quite worried about my Japanese language skills, as I had only recently arrived in Japan and was not very confident. However, my manager and colleagues made that challenge much easier by offering tremendous support. That period truly showed me the global nature of Renesas’ culture.

My trainer provided all necessary documents in English, and I was relieved to learn that company documentation is available in both English and Japanese. He was very understanding of my situation and ensured I could follow along by confirming each step and using simple, easy-to-understand Japanese.

I also enjoyed the teamwork and brainstorming sessions, where we discussed concepts and approaches on the whiteboard. During group discussions, my opinions were welcomed and respected, which gave me a strong sense of team spirit and inclusion. Overall, doing the internship helped me identify my interest in SoC design by experiencing the actual work and getting a feel for Renesas' culture.

Becoming Part of the Team Was Like a Dream Come True

After completing the internship, I was very eager to join Renesas full-time. I wanted to get closely involved in the development of R-Car and work in the field of SoC design, which had become a strong area of interest for me. During the internship, I got hands-on experience with SoC-related work while prototyping CAN-IP on an FPGA emulator. That experience really deepened my curiosity. I realized how fascinating and challenging SoC design is – especially when you're dealing with real IP and complex system integration.

Also, the Renesas work culture was very appealing to me. The globally oriented policies such as casual dress code, flexible working hours, and work-from-home system had made Renesas my top choice. So when I received the full-time offer, I was absolutely delighted – it felt like a moment of relief and accomplishment. I knew I was stepping into a role where I could pursue my dream of becoming a skilled SoC engineer.

What I appreciate most about being part of Renesas is its global culture and employee-friendly policies, which make it a truly great place to work. Renesas’ culture is built around the TAGIE principles: Transparent, Agile, Global, Innovative, and Entrepreneurial. Among these, Transparency and Global resonate the most with me. For example, I have a one-on-one meeting every week with my manager where I can openly discuss challenges and clarify any doubts.

Team members and leaders are based in various locations around the globe, making the Renesas culture genuinely international. As a foreigner, I really value the efforts the company makes to create a comfortable work environment and to help its employees maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Approach Your Internship with Open and Curious Mindset and You’ll Excel

One piece of advice I would give to future interns is: don’t be afraid to ask questions to your manager and mentor. It’s perfectly okay if you don’t have prior experience in the semiconductor industry and are simply driven by interest. Proactively asking questions about unclear points, requesting repetition of difficult concepts, or even inquiring about the company’s culture – these are all seen as positive signs.

I believe that when you truly understand the problem statement and are able to solve even a small part of it, your confidence and interest in the work grow tremendously. Renesas offers a wealth of opportunities for growth. Approach your internship with an open and curious mindset and you’ll surely excel.
