Senior Field Applications Engineer (FAE)
We are seeking a highly capable Senior Field Applications Engineer (FAE) to support strategic customers across datacenter, AI, server, and advanced computing markets. This role is based in the San Jose, CA area.
This position combines strong hands on technical execution, customer facing support, and system level power expertise. The ideal candidate brings experience in power electronics and board level debug, with the ability to support customers through design, bring up, validation, and issue resolution. This role is well suited for an experienced engineer who can work independently on complex technical issues while collaborating effectively across internal and customer teams.
Renesas provides comprehensive training on our digital multiphase power solutions, helping new engineers build expertise in our architectures, tools, and validation methodologies.
Responsibilities
1. Customer Facing Technical Support
- Serve as a key technical interface for customer accounts, supporting power architecture and voltage regulator engagements from design phase through production.
- Provide technical guidance on digital multiphase power controllers, power modules, and server class power delivery solutions.
- Support schematic reviews, layout reviews, board bring up, debug, and validation activities.
- Generate customer facing technical materials including program updates, validation reports, controller configuration files, issue summaries, and supporting waveform data.
- Assist customers during system validation, including VR performance, telemetry, protection behavior, and interaction with CPU, GPU, ASIC, or SoC power domains.
2. VR Simulation and Validation
- Perform VR solution simulations with application specific PDNs in SIMPLIS to support design reviews and early risk reduction.
- Execute validation of multiphase power solutions for datacenter and AI platforms, including transient response, efficiency, telemetry, fault behavior, and protection features.
- Develop and maintain test plans, validation checklists, and coverage matrices to ensure thorough evaluation across operating conditions.
- Use lab instrumentation and structured test methods to support repeatable, high quality validation.
3. Debug and Root Cause Analysis
- Diagnose complex electrical and system issues using oscilloscopes, electronic loads, current probes, network analyzers, power supplies, and related lab equipment.
- Drive issue resolution with urgency, including support for high priority customer escalations.
- Partner with design, systems, and applications teams to identify root cause and help define corrective actions.
- Escalate appropriately when deeper cross functional support is needed, while maintaining ownership of customer communication and follow through.
4. Program Execution and Technical Ownership
- Work closely with Sales, Product Line, Marketing, and engineering teams to support successful customer engagements and design wins.
- Manage multiple customer activities in parallel, including design support, validation efforts, debug tasks, and issue tracking.
- Drive execution against customer milestones and internal priorities with strong attention to detail and responsiveness.
- Help mitigate technical risk on active programs by identifying issues early and driving timely action.
- Support successful design adoption by combining technical depth with practical judgment on where to focus effort for highest customer and business impact.
- BS or MS in Electrical Engineering or related field.
- 5+ years of experience in power electronics, voltage regulator validation, power applications, or system level power architecture.
- Strong hands on experience with bench level electrical testing and debug methodologies.
- Working knowledge of oscilloscopes, function generators, electronic loads, power supplies, current probes, and soldering tools.
- Experience supporting customer technical issues through structured debug and problem solving.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with both engineers and customer stakeholders.
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent technical activities with a strong sense of urgency and ownership.
Preferred Qualifications
