Job Description

Job Summary:

This is an opportunity to lead and develop our Legal function in India, supporting Renesas's rapidly growing business operations in the region. We are looking for a seasoned legal leader who is driven, adaptable, and passionate about delivering high-quality legal support in this dynamic and challenging industry. Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel located in the US, you will serve as the primary local legal advisor for Renesas's India operations, working in close partnership with the India business leader to drive business growth and operational excellence. At the same time, you will be an integral member of the global legal team, collaborating closely with legal colleagues across regions to leverage the full capability and expertise of the entire organization. Our internal clients rely on us for support on developing, producing, promoting, and selling exciting, cutting-edge technology solutions all around the world.

Job Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership & Business Partnership

  • Lead the India Legal function as the primary point of contact for all local legal matters in India, setting priorities and ensuring alignment with both local business objectives and global legal strategy.
  • Partner closely with the India business leader and local management team to understand business priorities, identify legal risks and opportunities, and proactively deliver legal solutions that enable and accelerate the growth of Renesas's India business.
  • Build, develop, and manage the local legal team, including hiring, mentoring, and performance management, to support the evolving needs of the India business.

Collaboration with Global Legal Team

  • Serve as the India hub within the global legal network, actively collaborating with legal colleagues across regions and practice areas to share knowledge, align approaches, and leverage the collective capability and expertise of the entire global legal team.
  • Collaborate with global legal team members to develop and implement best practices and policies in the areas of contracting, licensing, corporate governance, and compliance, ensuring consistency while adapting to local requirements.
  • Engage global legal colleagues on complex transactions, and specialized topics, ensuring that the India team benefits from—and contributes to—the organization's global legal resources and institutional knowledge.

Commercial & Transactional

  • Oversee the drafting, review, and negotiation of a wide variety of agreements, including joint development, distribution, vendor, sales and logistics, services, IP license, partnership, and other commercial contracts.
  • Lead legal support for M&A and other strategic transactions, post-acquisition restructuring, entity management, and integration activities relevant to India.

Advisory & Regulatory

  • Counsel business teams on a broad range of legal topics, including intellectual property, corporate governance, commercial law, competition, employment law, data privacy, and other legal and regulatory areas.
  • Advise business teams on licenses, registrations, and certifications required for operations, and liaise with relevant government authorities—including assessing eligibility, managing applications and approvals, and ensuring post-approval compliance.
  • Support the global export compliance team on export control matters, including guidance on applicable regulations and ensuring alignment with global trade compliance policies.

Compliance & Governance

  • Drive compliance initiatives in India, including vendor/third-party due diligence, internal investigations, reporting, and other corporate governance activities.

External Counsel

  • Build and manage relationships with external law firms in India, overseeing the selection, coordination, and cost-effective management of outside legal services.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • LL.B. or equivalent law degree from a recognized Indian university; advanced law degree (LL.M.) is a plus
  • Enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of India
  • 7-9 years of post-qualification experience (PQE), with a meaningful combination of reputable law firm and in-house legal experience, preferably in the technology or semiconductor industry
  • Demonstrated experience in leading or managing a legal team or function

Skills

  • Exceptional ability to partner with business leaders and translate business objectives into actionable legal strategies
  • Collaborative mindset with a natural inclination to work across borders, share expertise, and draw on the strengths of a global team
  • Deep knowledge of Indian corporate laws, regulations, and compliance frameworks
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation, and communication skills in English
  • Strong experience managing external counsel and controlling legal budgets
  • Ability to work effectively across cultures and time zones in a global, matrixed organization.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with sound judgment and the ability to prioritize in a fast-paced environment
