Renesas’ Mobile Power products group is seeking a Staff Applications Engineer for the Optical Product Line (Time-of-Flight, light and proximity sensors). The candidate will work closely with local and remote teams (Packaging, Design, Test, Product, and Marketing engineers, Sales team) to drive applications tasks throughout the development cycle of Renesas’ high performance optical products.


This includes: contribute to the definition of innovative and differentiated products, optical system definition and simulation, IC and system level silicon validation and characterization, design of evaluation boards (circuit design, schematic and layout), software development, competitive analysis, system teardowns, generating and maintaining technical materials (e.g. datasheet, application notes, etc.). Also provide support for existing optical products in the market, support failure analysis, and technical training for FAEs/Sales teams.


Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree in Optics, EE or equivalent
  • Minimum 8 years' relevant industry experience
  • Highly motivated, passionate individual, comfortable delivering to a deadline in a fast paced environment
  • Understands importance of customers and strives to provide timely support. Ability to create and maintain strong customer relationships, and to attend and actively engage in high profile meetings with key customers
  • Excellent communication skills—both written and verbal with internal team and customers
  • Have a good understanding of fundamental analog circuits and basics of digital circuits
  • Proficient with laboratory equipment, including: oscilloscopes, meters, signal generators, etc.
  • Must perform IC and system level validation; debugging skills, root cause analysis
  • Ability to create schematics using OrCAD; experience in developing PCB design with parasitic analysis a plus
  • Basic software skills in any major programming language (e.g. C/C++, VB, Python, C#, etc.)
  • Knowledge of LEDs, lasers and Photodetectors
  • Knowledge of general optics
  • Must write datasheets, application notes, white papers
  • Some domestic and international travel should be expected


Additional desired skills:

  • Laboratory automation experience (e.g. using C/C++, VB6, VB.NET, LabView, Python)
  • Software: driver development, C# or VB GUI development
  • Experience with simulation tools and modeling -  SIMPLIS/SIMetrix, Cadence, Spice
  • Experience with optical and mechanical prototyping
  • Familiarity with Zemax or Fred and Solidworks
  • Familiarity with laser safety and laser safety certification
